Viking Cheers!! Focus on the Fabulous!!
We’ve had so many events going on this week it’s been hard to keep up. The only way we’ve been able to successfully pull off so many events is with the hard work and dedication of our great staff once again fulfilling our commitment to excellence. Tuesday, thanks to Dr. Wiley and his staff, and with the help of our crew, we were able to provide 60 sports physicals to our students! Cruzita helped students fill out paperwork, helped with translations and kept things running smoothly. Our very own Dr. Dennis Schoenfelder helped with the musculoskeletal exams and did a fantastic job. I appreciate his willingness to jump in and help. We couldn’t have done it without him. Thanks also to Matthew, Greg and Etienne, our AmeriCorp/Vista guys. They’ve helped me out on several occasions this week and I appreciate it. I know they enjoyed helping with their physical stations. It was great to provide this opportunity for our students so that they could get their physicals taken care of so they are ready for the upcoming sports seasons.
6th Grade Orientation
Thursday we held our 6th grade orientation. We welcomed our incoming sixth graders, provided them with a light dinner, went over expectations and plans for the year and handed out computers. Adele Alfson helped get the evening organized and the dinner set up. Shirley jumped in at the last minute and helped me with translating my presentation. Gracias Shirley. I appreciate the middle school staff that was there to meet parents and help show them around. Thanks to Lisa Renner, Susan Banning, Julie Weatherford, Maria Villagomez and Rosa Ramos,or making themselves available and welcoming our 6th grade students and families. Marsha manned the paperwork table and made sure we got all the necessary information for our students. Once again the tech crew did a great job with their part of the evening and got the computers handed out
successfully.
I don't want to be redundant thanking people, but I have had so much help getting things accomplished that I want to make sure I recognize everybody for their hard work and willingness to pitch in. We have an amazing staff! You all exemplify what it means to strive for excellence in all we do, everyday!

Rewind
I attended the Working Together Training most of the day on Monday. This will be a service learning project that our students will be working on with Katrina Ruggles in her Choices classes. Tuesday, Becky ran the NWEA training in the library and after school we held sports physicals. NWEA testing started on Wednesday. Thanks to Shirley for helping gather all the scores and keeping us up to date so we could meet with students in a timely fashion. I also appreciate all the help from the library staff with the testing and ensuring that things ran smoothly. I had a quick meeting at lunch with the Explore teachers to confirm plans for the year and discuss the focus of each class for the first quarter. We continued NWEA testing on Thursday and held the 6th grade orientation that evening. Friday, Mr. Jones and I met with students to determine their placements for the upcoming year based on their test results. Friday afternoon I held a short middle school staff meeting to go over some things regarding our new building and the new school year. I also met with the LA department to review plans for this year and ensure that we are coordinating our efforts to provide our students with the best instruction possible. All of the activities this week reinforce our focus on quality planning, instruction and assessment to ensure high student achievement. Friday, I headed to Leadville with my family and we watched our soccer team play three games, one on Friday and two on Saturday. Our boys worked hard and looked good out there! It will be fun to watch them this season.
Forward Focus
We are looking forward to an exciting first day of school on Tuesday. We have some great things planned for our students and hope to start the new year with a bang! I have several meetings scheduled during the week, including para responsibilities and IEPs. Our middle school football team will be playing their first game against Del Norte on Thursday night. Saturday I will be at the induction training at BOCES.
Looking forward to another great school year in which we provide our students with support so that they can achieve at high levels and be successful in life!
