Viking Cheers!! Focus on the Fabulous!!
We had a great first week of Jump Start. We have about 145 students attending the Jump Start program and our teachers and students hit the ground running. The kids were excited to be in the newbuilding and could hardly contain themselves on the playground! On Tuesday, when we lost power for a significant part of the day, I was impressed with how instruction continued, and teachers had students focused on learning, no excuses! I saw teachers and staff living out the core belief that EVERYONEmust be committed to excellence in ALL they do EVERYDAY (even when we lose power).
Rewind
Monday was a busy day as we started Jump Start. I was available in the halls before school and during passing period,
helping kids figure out where there classes were. The day went smoothly and everybody got to where they needed to be, eventually. Tuesday, Mr. Hurtado and I went around to all the middle school classes and reviewed the expectations
and rules for Jump Start. We want to make sure everybody has a clear understanding of the purpose of JS and understands that our priority is providing students with individualized, intentional instruction. This supports our purpose to increase academic achievement for ALL students. Tuesday afternoon, I had the pleasure of working out with the Cross Country team! Thanks Mr. Schoenfelder for letting me tag along. That evening I attended the monthly accountability and BOE meeting.
Wednesday morning I attended the All Valley PLC training session that prepared me to facilitate one of the afternoon sessions that focused on curriculum and effective lesson planning. The majority of the remainder of the day I spent with Lori Cooper
attending a Reading Plus Webinar and then working on making final plans for incorporating the Reading Plus program into our TI schedule.
Thursday morning I had a CDE/TED meeting at Adams State to help with the reauthorization process. I also scheduled time to meet with ASU faculty and finalize plans for our upcoming partnership in which the Senior Block students will be completing their practicum hours in our middle/high classrooms.
The Race to the Top of the Valley Collaborative went well on Friday. We listened to a dynamic speaker, Craig Zablocki, who inspired us to focus on our purpose in education and not to spend our energy worrying about things we have no control over. Next, we all proceeded to our respective PLCs in which we established professional relationships with others in our content areas, reviewed the key components of effective PLCs and did some team building activities. In the afternoon, we discussed curriculum, lesson objectives and DFA’s in our PLCs.

Forward Focus
Monday, I have a couple of meetings scheduled related to NWEA testing and rules for the upcoming school year. I plan on getting into classrooms this week, as much as possible, to conduct walkthroughs. I will be focusing time on getting things ready for our pre-registration on Friday. Students will have the chance to get their schedules, laptops, and lockers when they come in on Friday. We will also have parents fill out necessary paperwork for the year. We will also be providing information on physicals for students at this time. We will be offering physicals at school on Tuesday, August 28th from 4:00- 7:00 pm. The cost will be $25.00. Please help spread the word so that we can get all of our students’ physicals taken care of at the beginning of the year. We will be pre-registering 7th and 8th grade students from 2:00- 4:00 pm on Friday afternoon and 10th-12th graders will pre-register from 4:00- 6:00 pm. We hope that this will help things run more smoothly on the first day of school and prevent some congestion
in the office.
