Focus on the Fabulous
Skoglund Middle School students have been working hard and involved in a number of fabulous activities this past week. Ms. Banning helped to organize the Read Across America efforts with our middle school kids. There were a total of 35 middle school students who visited the preschool and kindergarten classes during the week to read books to the younger students. Our middle school students took time to prepare for this activity by practicing reading their books a number of times. The students reported the challenges of holding the little kids attention, but all said they would like to do this again! Thanks Ms. Banning for organizing these efforts to reinforce the importance of reading in our younger students!
On Thursday and Friday we had sixteen middle school students who competed at the regional Science Fair competition at Adams State. This was one of the largest groups of students that we’ve had compete from the middle school. Kids worked hard throughout the third quarter to get their projects together. Ms. Dolan was the middle school coordinator.
Mrs. Newmyer recognized the effort and great behavior of two of her band student with Good Conduct Awards. Alexis Sanchez and Adrian Martinez both received these awards for their commitment to excellence in band! Way to go!
Saturday our wrestlers did a great job at the Del Norte tournament. Carlos Valencia is the head coach and we have a couple of high school wrestlers, Angel Chavez and DeAngelo Martinez, working with the middle school kids in helping them develop their skills.
Rewind
I had the chance to get into a lot of classrooms this past week. I was impressed with the quality instruction that I saw throughout the week. Teachers are fulfilling our core belief of quality planning, instruction and assessment leading to increased student achievement. I saw a number of engagement strategies being employed, from write-round-robin in Mr. Vigil’s class, to gallery walks in Hagan’s, to show down in Donaldson’s class. Teachers are working hard with the students, reviewing materials and making sure our students are well prepared for TCAP that is coming up in two weeks. I also want to acknowledge the way my middle school teachers are so willing to reflect on feedback and make appropriate adjustments to make sure we are providing our students with the best instruction possible. Teachers are always willing to discuss different approaches and converse about the strategies they are using. This reflection shows the level of professionalism of our staff!
I met with Mr. Welsh on Tuesday and went over my mid-year evaluation. Just like I asked my teachers to do, I will be setting goals for myself to strive towards accomplishing by the end of the year. I attended my monthly AD meeting on Wednesday and 8th grade students went to the Upward Bound presentation.

Forward Focus
This coming week will be our final prep for TCAP. I hope to finish my 3rd quarter walkthroughs the first part of the week. Tuesday evening will be our monthly Accountability and BOE meetings. We will be wrapping up our third quarter at the end of the week. Our middle school wrestlers will compete at Monte Vista on Friday and again on Saturday in Alamosa.
