Focus on the Fabulous
Mr. Welsh with Senator Larry Crowder
I had the opportunity to travel with Mr. Welsh to Denver for the Colorado Association of School Executives Day at the Capitol. I appreciate having the opportunity to have made this trip as it was extremely informative and has motivated me to get more involved and pay closer attention to education legislation. We started the morning watching the Education Committee meet. A major focus of the day was in regards to school finance. During the Education Committee session, they presented an overview of educational funding. Next, we had the opportunity to visit the Senate floor and see the start of the morning session. We got to meet and visit with several Senators, including Michael Johnston, Gail Schwartz, Larry Crowder and Jeanne Nicholson. What was really impressive was to see Mr. Welsh in action. He is on a first name basis with a number of the Senators, lobbyists, and various committee members. He is definitely having an impact on the decisions that are being made at the state level and he is representing the Center school district and the San Luis Valley in a very positive light. A big portion of the day was spent meeting with Senator Johnston’s staff as they reviewed the bill that they are proposing to support school finance. It’s definitely a complex issue and there are many qualified people, including our superintendent, who are working hard to improve the funding situation for Colorado schools. Mr. Welsh is living out the core belief that EVERYONE must be committed to excellence in ALL they do EVERY day.
I want to once again congratulate our Skoglund Spotlight Students for the month: Esmerelda Guzman, Aaliyah Garcia and Hunter Paiz. These three students were nominated by their teachers for their hard work and positive attitudes. Our Spotlight students are showing their commitment to excellence in ALL they do EVERY day.

Rewind
This week was a busy one. Monday started out reviewing lesson plans and scheduling plans for the week. I met with Lori to review NWEA data from winter testing. I will be making plans to review scores with middle schoolers, but have already started the after school tutoring program based on testing scores. That afternoon I met with Mr. Jones to make plans for Wednesday’s PLC. Tuesday morning I was able to get into a couple of classrooms. I also met with Debbie from PEBC to discuss the mentor/resident process. She and I were able to discuss walkthroughs and the process of providing feedback to teachers. I also met with Ben Kern from HELMs. We reviewed the SPARK program and how it is being implemented in Skoglund. That afternoon I met with Mr. Welsh and I received feedback from my mid-year evaluation. Tuesday evening I traveled to Denver with Mr. Welsh to participate in the CASE Day at the Capitol. Wednesday was an early start, as we met with Bruce Caughey, CASE President, for a brief review of the day. We were part of the many administrators from around the state that were there to encourage a more active role in the legislative process. Thursday morning began at Adams State meeting with other Valley Administrators and the PEBC staff. We discussed and made plans for future collaborative efforts. Thursday afternoon I got caught up on some paperwork and then supervised the middle school girls’ basketball game against San Luis. Our basketball girls had a great week with wins across the board, defeating Sangre on Tuesday and Centennial on Thursday. Friday I was able to get into several classrooms and provide feedback on planning and instruction. Saturday morning I was at Adams State to help with the regional History Fair competition. I was in charge of the junior and senior documentary divisions.
Forward Focus
Monday morning I will be reviewing lesson plans and scheduling walk throughs for the week. I will also be treating the Skoglund Spotlight students to lunch. Tuesday I have several student meetings to ensure that with our support all students can achieve at high levels. Our Lady Vikings will be playing at home on Tuesday against Sierra Grande. Wednesday, our 8th graders will play a pick-up game against Sanford, and Thursday both teams will travel to Alamosa for the last game of the regular season. Good luck ladies! Wednesday we will hold our Skoglund Middle School Spelling Bee @ 11:00 am in the auditorium. We are also planning on collaborating with the administration team from Alamosa during the day and conducting walkthroughs in both districts. Friday, as a staff, we will be heading to San Luis for our last All Valley PLC for the year. Saturday I will be helping with the Valley Classic.
