Focus on the Fabulous
Audience with an Astronaut
Even though we had a short week back after Spring Break, there were some great things going on. On Friday, I was able to travel with two busloads of elementary and middle school students to the Air Force Academy and attend the Audience with an Astronaut day. It was a great experience for all of our students, as they had the chance to hear about the experiences of former NASA astronaut and Space Foundation Special Advisor Dr. Leroy Chiao. He presented to the students, showed some amazing photos from space, and talked about his experiences as a Space Shuttle astronaut and as a resident of the International Space Station. The kids had the opportunity to listen and participate in different presentations from people involved in various aspects of space and science. The kids were able to watch a space systems demonstration, fun with physics, and a chemistry magic show. Thanks to Gail Martinez and Kate Newmyer for being our teacher liaisons. Without their involvement this opportunity would not have been possible for the middle school kids. I also want to thank Deb Lujan for jumping in to drive and Mike and Carol for rearranging things to make this trip possible. It was well worth it and reinforces our core belief that with our support ALL children can achieve at high levels and be successful in life.
Another big event this week was the Ipad drawing that took place on Thursday. Throughout TCAP testing teachers recognized students efforts with TCAP tickets. Students had the opportunity to win three tickets a day, one for each testing session. Those tickets were entered into the drawing on Thursday and one student from each grade was awarded an Ipad. The winning students were Giovanni Negrete for 6th grade, Hannah Montoya for 7th grade, and Mason Torr for 8th grade. Congratulations. By the number of tickets entered into the drawing, it was evident that kids worked hard on TCAP! This encompasses the final step of our core belief that states that quality planning, instruction, and assessments lead to high achievement for all students. The hard work of our teachers since the beginning of the year prepared our students to give it their all on these tests. Thanks to everyone for their hard work!
