Focus on the Fabulous
Our Jump Start program is off to a great start. We completed the first few days of JS with focused instruction and engaged students! This year we have approximately 45 middle school students attending Jump Start. These students will be spending time with their teachers in small
intensive groups, working on developing their skills and raising their
achievement levels. It’s a great program designed to hold kids accountable while working with students who need a little extra support, to ensure that we are meeting their needs educationally.
Our teachers did a great job of using data from NWEA and TCAP to design purposeful instruction for the kids. This reinforces our core belief that quality planning, instruction, and assessment leads to high achievement for ALL students.
TCAP results were released Wednesday and Skoglund Middle School did an amazing job across the board.
Our students showed growth above the state average in ALL content areas and reinforced our purpose of increasing academic achievement for ALL students. Middle school students had 58% growth in reading, 62% growth in writing and 70% growth in math. Another impressive accomplishment at the middle school level was the fact that ALL our students showed growth. Kids in special education and our English Language Learners showed growth above the state level! This again demonstrates that we are living out our core belief that with our support ALL children can achieve at high levels and be successful in life.

Rewind
This past week was our first week with kids. We kicked off Jump Start on Monday morning. Throughout the week, we conducted NWEA testing for students who were not required to attend JS. Thanks to the library staff, Becky, Cheri, and Carol, for their help with the process. Mrs. DeHerrera and Mr. Chavez have also been extremely helpful in rounding up kids and helping us to set up tutoring for those students who did not hit their targets. We also appreciate the elementary sharing their computer lab with us and Mrs. Werner for sharing the ARC to help us get our testing done.
We’ve had a number of meetings to get ready for the school year; RTIs to address needs of specific students, scheduling meetings related to class sizes and teachers, AD meetings to plan for fall seasons, and meetings to discuss various NWEA
and JS issues. We have spent a great deal of time working on the schedule to ensure that we best meet the needs
of our students. We have increased numbers at the middle school and high school and are trying to keep class sizes
small so that we can deliver quality instruction at all levels. We hope to finalize the schedule officially and get it out to staff at the beginning of the week. Tuesday evening we had our District Accountability and Board Meetings. On Wednesday,
Kevin and I met with Mr. Judd to discuss an administrative collaborative that we are going to be starting. We also
met with the Boettcher folks from Adams State to get a couple more of our teaching staff involved in the program.
Thursday and Friday our staff participated in the All Valley PLCs in Sangre de Cristo. Teachers worked on developing content level quarterlies for the Valley. This time was invaluable as our teachers engaged in great instructional conversations. Teachers worked hard to develop assessments that measure what’s intended and aligned to the state standards. Secondary principals also met to plan future PLCs at the administrative level.

Forward Focus
I plan on getting into classrooms this coming week to observe instruction. I have a couple of
RTIs scheduled throughout the week. I will also attend a couple of trainings focusing on I-pads and the digital radio system. We will be holding required tutoring throughout the week, for students who were not required to attend JS but did not hit their NWEA targets. We will be holding math and reading Monday through Wednesday at the ARC, and science and LA will be on Thursday and Friday.
Students have been notified if they are required to attend. I will also be meeting with middle school teachers to work on the aligned, integrated approach we will be focusing on at Skoglund this year.
Here’s to a great week! Thanks to our teachers for all their hard work and commitment to excellence! You are the best!!
