There’s a star among us! It was great to see our very own Joe Martinez featured on 9 News as the Teacher Who Cares for the month of November. They put together a really nice piece that featured Mr. Martinez, our brand new school, and the great work that

Rewind
Monday, I spent the day conducting Data Sharing with all of the middle school students. Students were given their individual data folders with NWEA and TCAP results and data cards. We took time to review the standard level of performance for each test and students had the chance to look at their results and set goals for improvement. The data cards were designed for students to identify areas of strength and weakness. One new element of the data review process was the inclusion of theparents. I asked the students to bring their parents by the data desk during parent teacher conferences so that I could meet with parents and review the data with them. On Wednesday and Thursday night I met with approximately sixty parents and reviewed their child’s data. We had the chance to discuss different strategies for raising student achievement, especially things that could be reinforced at home. It was great to have these conversations with parents, help them to have a better understanding of the assessment process, and develop plans in which we could work together to meet the needs of their children. I will look forward to continuing this aspect of data review in the future.
Tuesday I had several student meetings, including RTIs and IEPs. Julie Weatherford has been doing a great job leading the IEP meetings and designing schedules that best meet the needs of our students. I also appreciate the initiative that Julie took to share the differentiation video with the staff during our PLCs.
Wednesday I spent the majority of the day in Alamosa. I participated in the All Valley Administrator PLC at the BOCES that morning. Following that meeting, I attended the monthly AD meeting to discuss various activities and athletic issues. After the AD meeting, Kevin and I met with the Boettcher staff at Adams State to discuss best ways to monitor the program and measure success. We also reviewed the continuum of expectations that PEBC had designed for the program. Wednesday and Thursday we had Parent Teacher conferences from 3:30- 7:30 pm. We had a good turnout both nights, but a higher volume on Wednesday. Thanks to Mrs. Villagomez and the 7thgrade class for the yummy dinner on Wednesday night and the HS
girls’basketball team and Mr. Poole for the great BBQ on Thursday night. The staff was well fed!
I was able to get into quite a few classrooms on Thursday and had the chance to see some great instruction. Our staff continues to be dedicated to quality planning, instruction and assessment that leads to high student achievement.
Our 7th grade middle school boys traveled to Antonito on Tuesday. Thursday night, we hosted Moffat/Mountain Valley and both our 7th and 8th grade teams won!
Friday we gathered in Sierra Grande for the All Valley PLC. I enjoyed the first session, in which we had the opportunity to see a great video put together by Stephan Welsh thatreviewed the financial situation in the state and a presentation on the “Year of the Student”. We also got to see a presentation on the Gradual Release of Responsibility Model. This was an informative session and further refined our understanding of the approach to take when using this format. I was impressed with the conversations I overheard and the ideas being shared in the content area PLCs.
