As we finish up our first half of the school year, our hearts are saddened by the unthinkable tragedy in Connecticut.
It’s impossible to come to any sort of understanding about what happened on Friday in Newtown. But even in
the midst of the evil, the courage and love of our educational colleagues, motivated them to rise to the challenges they faced. From the principal and counselor who ran to confront the perpetrator, to the teachers who gave their lives to protect those in their care, fellow educators were called to give their all, and they rose to the occasion. So in this week’s Focus on the Fabulous, I would like to salute the staff of Sandy Hook Elementary and ask you all to keep all of them, and the families involved in this tragedy, in your thoughts and prayers. I know you already have.

Rewind
This past week, Skoglund Middle School students’ work was featured in the Fresh Point of View newspaper. The students have been working hard throughout the year in Mrs. Martinez’s LA classes developing their writing skills. This hard work was evidenced by the quality of their articles. We had thirty two students whose work was featured in the newspaper, far more than any other school in the Valley. Make sure you check out the newspaper and support them in their goal of encouraging reading and writing among the youth in our communities.
The middle school band students, under the leadership of Mrs. Newmyer, once again put on a great performance. I heard many positive comments about the program and want to acknowledge all that Mrs. Newmyer has done to build our middle/high band program.
On Monday of last week, I spent the day working on mid-year evaluations using Bloomboard. After school I attended the I-pad training as part of the DLT. Tuesday, I focused on lesson plan reviews and completing second quarter
walkthroughs. I took a personal day on Wednesday. Thursday, I spent the morning in Alamosa working with their admin. team on the new evaluation process and Bloomboard. Thursday and Friday I attended several RTI meetings to discuss student issues and academic programming. Saturday, I helped admin. the High School basketball tournament against La Veta.
