Viking Cheers!! Focus on the Fabulous!!
Brisa Castillo, Andres Almeida
and Cosme Cordova
There are many amazing students at Skoglund Middle School doing great things that are worthy of praise! The middle school staff wants to recognize the hard work, positive behaviors, and overall effort and character of those kids who are working hard to be super students! We are continuing our student recognition program that allows us to honor those students on a regular basis. Congratulations to our November Skoglund Spotlight Students- Brisa Castillo, Cosme Cordova, and Andres Almeida. Recognizing these students’ efforts supports our mission to promote excellence in our school.
Brisa Castillo is a 6th grade student. She was nominated and selected because of her great attitude and willingness to help other classmates. Her teachers said that her positive energy is unbelievable and that she goes over and beyond to help others. Teachers are impressed with whole persona. She is full of energy and always has a big smile on her face.
Cosme Cordova is another 6th grade student. He was nominated by teachers because he is a great student in class and is always willing to help other students when they are struggling. He was described as a computer whiz by Mrs. Atencio.
She said that if there is ever a student having trouble with their computer, they just have to ask, and Cosme is right there, by their side, to help fix the problem.
Our third Spotlight Student for the month is Andres Almeida. He is a 7th grade student who is involved in a variety of activities at school, including sports and band. Mrs. Ruggles described him as being a very conscientious student in her class.
He has a positive attitude and always participates in class activities. Teachers spoke of his kind demeanor and the fact that he has a smile that brightens the room.
It’s great to have such dedicated students who are true role models for our other kids. Way to go Brisa, Cosme and Andres! You are shining examples of Center Vikings! Keep up the great work. Thanks to the teachers who submitted nominations.

Rewind
I started the week in Denver finishing the second series of Mentoring Matter training that is preparing us for our involvement in the Boettcher program next year. Our middle school boys had their first couple of games this past week. On Tuesday they played tough games against Monte Vista. Thursday, our 6th and 7thgraders made the trek to San Luis and won an exciting game against Centennial. Wednesday our kids participated in ICAP activities that continue to reinforce our core belief of preparing our students to be successful in life. During our afternoon PLC, Mr. Welsh led the session on Bloomboard and guided teachers
through the process of completing their self evaluations. After this session, we continued the process of analyzing data to help better target instruction that will have a positive impact on our students that are on the border of moving from one category into the next on TCAP. This focus on data supports our belief that we believe ALL kids can achieve at high levels. Teachers then met to view a differentiation video provided by Julie Weatherford and review our Kagan Show Down strategy. Teachers will be planning instruction to incorporate that specific strategy over the next few weeks. It was great to drop by the different PLCs and see the great work that was going on thanks to our BLT
members.
We had some excitement in the building on Thursday when the 9 News crew visited to interview Mr. Joe Martinez for the November Teacher Who Cares. It was fun to have Gary Shapiro and the camera crew in the building. I think a few people were a little star struck! I was able to get into several classrooms and conducted another instructional walk with Mrs.
Ruybal. I also met with several students to address specific needs and individualize instructional plans. On Friday, I had the opportunity to eat lunch with our Skoglund Spotlight students. I enjoyed visiting with these amazing kids.

Gary Shapiro and 9 News Fans!
I will start the week by finishing up lesson plan reviews. I have several RTI meetings scheduled during the week to ensure that we are providing kids with quality,
individualized instruction. I also have a number of IEPs scheduled as annuals are coming due and we have had a number of new students transfer to our district. Our 8thgrade basketball team will travel to Antonito on Tuesday, and then we will host Moffat/Mountain Valley on Thursday. Wednesday, I will spend the morning and early afternoon in Alamosa, attending the Valley Administrators PLC at BOCES and then the monthly AD meeting. Wednesday and Thursday we will have Parent Teacher conferences from 3:30– 7:00 pm. Students will attend all seven periods and be released at 2:00 pm on Wednesday and Thursday. We will be sending out the revised schedule on Monday. The girls’ HS basketball team will be providing dinner on Wednesday night. Friday we will have our third All Valley PLC which will be held in Sierra Grande. Mr. Welsh sent a tentative schedule this past week. Please reference that if you have any questions.
Make sure you watch Channel 9 News Friday morning at 6:00 am or 4:00 pm to see Joe Martinez in action!
