Viking Cheers!! Focus on the Fabulous!!
Congratulations to 7th grade student Jordan Lobato for her success with her science fair project. She has qualified to compete at the international level (International Sustainability World Engineering, Energy and Environment Olympiad). This is quite an accomplishment and an acknowledgement of all her hard work. As a finalist, she won $500.00 and all expense paid trip to Houston to compete against 72 countries. Jerry Gonzales is also a semifinalist at ISWEEP. He won a plaque for the school and $100.00. Both students are sponsored by Mr. Martinez. The support and guidance she has received from Mr. Newmyer and Mr. Martinez have helped both of these students achieve at this level. This is a shining example of our pursuit of excellence in Center schools! Way to go Jordan!
Skoglund Wrestling Tournament
This Saturday we hosted a successful middle school wrestling tournament in which our middle school boys took 1st place as a team! We had a great turn out with 13 middle school teams competing from all around the region. Our only remaining gym was filled to capacity with spectators! This event would not have been possible without the team of support that I had helping throughout the day and I would like to recognize and thank those individuals for all of their assistance! Chris Vance was the mastermind that kept the tournament running smoothly. He did an outstanding job getting teams registered, putting brackets together, keeping them updated, tallying scores, and making sure boys were matched appropriately and wrestling non-stop throughout the day. Sarah Vance was a huge support as well, with administration of the tournament and making sure Chris stayed focused and on task! She filled many roles throughout the day including helping with the brackets, announcing, scorekeeping, and organizing awards, to name a few. She even got her son Kollin to help at the scoring table. Thank you Vances! You helped to pull this whole thing off! Julio also helped with the technological aspect of the tournament. He helped get the sound system, computers and printers set up and running. He also helped Chris keep things updated and running smoothly at the head table, while taking pictures throughout the day. Holmes was there to take photos too! Check out all the great pictures at: http://www.center.k12.co.us/schools/ms/athletics/photo_galleries/2011-2012/wrestling_tournament_031812/thumb.html. Susan Banning worked her magic once again by organizing and hosting the best hospitality room in the Valley! The coaches and A.D.s look forward to visiting Center because they are treated so well. Susan spends so much of her personal time and resources organizing events and making sure we have plenty of delicious food for our room. I can’t thank her enough for all she did for us this weekend and all she does for us on a daily basis! Thanks to the whole Weatherford family for helping with hospitality and the score tables. Thanks to Mike and Carol Phillips for helping at the score tables and picking up the slack wherever needed. John Noriega was a fabulous announcer and helped to keep things running smoothly. Scott Poole helped with score tables. The 6th and 8th grade classes did a great job with concessions, under the guidance of Shirley, Linda, and Joe. Maria Villagomez was helping wherever needed all day long! I’d also like to recognize the custodial staff- Panta, Gerald and Walter, for their help throughout the day. They helped supervise team rooms, assisted kids, coaches and parents, and kept our facilities looking great. Every time I asked Panta for help, he did it willingly, with a smile on his face! Thank you all for all your help. It was a big job and a lot of hard work, but it was fun and successful with such a great team!!
Our cheerleaders did a super job cheering our boys to their team win! They performed a dance routine between rounds and did a fantastic job! Nice work Lady Vikings!
Our 6th graders took their Merit Trip to the Loft on Friday. Thanks to Maria Villagomez and the AmeriCorp volunteers for helping to chaperone. The kids had a great time!

Rewind
Last week I had several meetings dealing with IEPs, RTIs, and student progress. Tuesday evening I attended the monthly Accountability and BOE meetings. I worked on the data board at various times during the week and made arrangements for our wrestling tournament. Thursday, I attended the FF & E meeting to go over classroom set ups. I also spent time updating student progress on our reading program. Friday morning, after our breakfast we had the TCAP proctoring meeting. After the meeting, I had the chance to review our data board with core teachers. Lori guided us through the process and we had some good conversations regarding student progress. The data board has been organized using CSAP, NWEA, IRI, writing assessment, and language proficiency data. It is a great visual representation of how our students are performing, and helps us to see things from a different perspective. Even though the data may not always show us what we want to see, it gives us valuable information that enables us to make informed decisions and to target instruction to address student needs. This quality planning, instruction and assessment will lead to high student achievement. Putting the data board together took some effort. Lori was an integral part of the process and I appreciate her willingness to get data together and organized so that we can use it effectively. I also want to thank J.J., Maria and Alan for helping to get all the data up and organized on the board. I appreciate your willingness to help! I think I would have gone crazy with all those dots on my own!!! The rest of the day Friday was spent making final preparations for the wrestling tournament.
Forward Focus
We are starting our fourth quarter this week and will be getting ready for TCAP testing. Kevin and I will be making the official schedule and will be assigning teachers to help with proctoring based on student needs. We will send the parent letter out this week to remind them of testing dates and the importance of student attendance at school. I plan on getting into classrooms as much as possible. There are several meetings this week including Bully Prevention, construction, and student checks. The Vikings will be wrestling at Del Norte on Friday and then compete at the regional meet on Saturday in Alamosa.
Have a super week!
