Viking Cheers!! Focus on the Fabulous!!
We had a lot of excitement at Skoglund Middle School this week. First of all, our very own Joe Martinez won the Channel 9 Teacher Who Cares for the month of November. Joe is being recognized for the positive impact he has made on our students and the community. Joe makes himself available to the students so that they understand the importance of a quality education and do well in school. In his PE classes he teaches kids about healthy living so that they can apply that knowledge to their lives. He promotes healthy living by the way he lives his life and he inspires our students to do the same. His willingness and positive attitude are commendable and are representative of what a 9 News Teacher Who Cares is all about and supports our belief that EVERYONE must be committed to excellence in ALL they do EVERY day. Congratulations Joe, you deserve it!
I would also like to recognize the generosity of the community and their support for our annual Open House. We received some great door prizes from the following businesses and groups and I would like to thank them for their support: Carters Grocery Store, Adams State University, Coach Flood and the Viking Football team, Colorado Sports, SLV Pizza Company, Kevin Jones and the Center Athletic Association, Becky Reed and the Fyock Library, the Sand Dunes Swimming Pool, Ninos in Monte
Vista, Dairy Queen, George Welsh and Center Schools. We had a great turn out once again for Open House!
Linda Donaldson was selected to serve with a team of educators on Colorado’s District Sample Curriculum Project. She will
participate in the creation of the sample curricula based on the new Colorado Academic Standards for math. Only ten applicants in each grade were selected for each content area, so Linda’s expertise in this area was recognized and appreciated.Linda will represent our school well in this endeavor. Congratulations Linda!

Rewind
The beginning of the week I spent reviewing lesson plans and sending feedback to teachers. I also spent time the first part of the week calling on and collecting door prizes from various organizations. Tuesday morning started early with our first Building Leadership Team meeting. We welcomed our newest members, Gail Martinez and Scott Poole, and made preparations for our upcoming PLC. We also discussed strategies that will help us to communicate more efficiently as a staff, along with the middle/high walkthrough forms. We will be sharing that information during our PLC meeting on Wednesday. This week we also welcomed our Adams State senior block students to the middle/high. We will have fourteen college students working with our staff and students on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. This is part of our newly established partnership with Adams State.
Wednesday night we had our annual Open House. Mr. Braiden did a great job of getting everything organized. Thanks to everybody who pitched in to make the night a success. Our middle school volleyball girls had two games this week. Tuesday they defeated Monte Vista in some exciting games and Thursday they put up a good fight against Del Norte. Our football team only had one game this week against Del Norte. They defeated the Tigers for a second time this season on Thursday afternoon. Friday we hosted our annual cross country invitational. Our runners competed extremely well and we had several top finishers. Friday night I helped supervise the high school football game against Custer County.

Forward Focus
Monday and Tuesday I will be in Denver for a Mentoring Matters training. This training is one of the first steps in the process of our involvement with the Boettcher program. Tuesday night our volleyball team will host Creede and Thursday our girls will travel to Sierra Grande. Our cross country team will participate in the High Altitude Challenge in Alamosa on Tuesday afternoon. Our football team will travel to Centauri on Thursday. I will be getting into classrooms again this week. On Wednesday we will have our first ICAP day with students. Training for teachers will take place Tuesday afternoon or Wednesday morning. Wednesday afternoon we will have our first PLC of the year.
Have a great week!
