Viking Cheers!! Focus on the Fabulous!!
This week I want to recognize several people who were willing to step in and help out when we were a little short handed. Thanks to Annie Rice for helping to cover some extra classes this week, Joe Martinez for helping Mr. Jones out in ISS, and Brandon Selby for being willing to cover lunch duties. They each gave up some of their personal time to help out and did it with no complaints! Thanks for pitching in and always being willing to help out! It’s appreciated!
I also want to commend Teddy Garcia’s artistic ability on our new logo! It looks great!

Everyone must be committed to the pursuit of excellence.
During our PLC on Wednesday, we took time to review the results from our winter NWEA and quarterly assessments. Looking at this data, gave us the chance to reflect on what we are doing well and also identify some areas that we need to continue to focus on. The conversations that I heard during this time reinforced to me that we are all giving 100% towards the goal of improved student achievement. Teachers were able to look at the results and determine where we were falling short in terms of instruction. Teachers created lists of kids that we need to continue to target with increased interventions. Teachers discussed what was working well and how ideas can be shared to further improve our instruction. Participating in and observing the conversations that were taking place was evidence of the fact that we are all committed to the pursuit of excellence at Skoglund Middle School!

We are preparing our students to be successful in life.
The ICAP activities that our students have been participating in, thanks to Katrina’s organization, are focused on preparing our students for post-secondary options. The intent of our ICAP day is to assist students in developing and working towards a plan that ensures readiness for postsecondary and workforce success. The structure of this day is to help kids explore future options and begin setting goals and making plans to see those opportunities through. Our staff has embraced this process and every staff member is contributing to this process of helping our students prepare to be successful in life.

Rewind
I had several meetings last week involving math data, expulsions, bully prevention, furniture plans and ICAP trainings. The administration team met for a book study and we also attended the Monte/Center PLC. I met with Mr. Welsh on Wednesday for my mid-year evaluation. That afternoon, our early release PLC was focused on reviewing data from our winter NWEA scores and our quarterly assessments. I also attended both the middle school games during the week and the high school basketball games on Friday night!

Forward Focus
This coming week I will have several RTI meetings to address the needs of several students. I also plan on meeting with individual classroom teachers to discuss furniture preferences for classrooms. I will be sending out invites to teachers to meet with them and go over classroom set ups. I will meet with Mike Newman, our new Mi Animo partner, on Wednesday. Winter sports’ pictures will be on Wednesday. Friday afternoon we will host a wrestling dual and Saturday I will help with All Valley. I plan on working on the reading competition this week, charting student progress, and giving the kids an update on their standings. We will also be recognizing our first round of Skoglund Spotlight Students this week, so please send in your nominations by Wednesday!
