Focus on the Fabulous
Congratulations to our amazing 7th grade students! They have once again clinched the win on the Merit Race! They have excelled in getting assignments done, getting to class on time, working hard and exhibiting great behavior. The 7th graders have voted to go swimming at Hooper Pool, so I will be making plans this week to make that happen! We will be starting a new middle school race on Monday.
Thanks to the efforts of Katrina Ruggles and Marsha Felmlee, Skoglund Middle School has once again received the Healthy School Champion award! Our school is being recognized for our efforts in creating a healthy school and implementing an effective Coordinated School Health model. As a result of this award, Skoglund will receive $2500 to help support our school health efforts.

I am so proud of the work these students have been showing me throughout this school year. They come to class eager and ready to work and they have come a long way in their math learning. It is so hard to believe that the year is almost over.
We have been working very hard in math class the past few weeks on Geometric Concepts. Students have been identifying geometric shapes, and identifying all the attributes of these shapes. We have also been working hard creating formulas to find the perimeter, area, surface area, and volume of the different shapes, such as rectangles, triangles, circles, prisms, cones, cylinders and even pyramids. They learned some karate moves to help them remember the different formulas. Ask your students to show you their new “karate moves”.
Now, we are beginning to focus on TCAP preparation. We will be reviewing many of those concepts that we learned at the beginning of the year, as well as I am working very hard to “fill in the gaps” of the students’ learning. Students will be taking home TCAP preparation worksheets every night to help them study for the test. Please be sure that they are completing these practice tests and returning them every day. I know that everyone will do very well this year on the TCAP test.

Rewind
This past week I enjoyed meeting with middle school students and reviewing their data. On Wednesday, I spent the day going over Winter NWEA scores with the middle school students and having them set goals to prepare for the upcoming TCAP tests. Kids were able to see whether or not they hit their mid-year goals and revisited their goals for TCAP. I was able to get into quite a few classrooms during the week and observe instruction and learning. I also had the chance to see some exciting basketball games on Thursday and Friday. Thursday night our high school teams had some action packed games against Sargent. Friday, we traveled to Cripple Creek, and all four of our teams had victories!
Forward Focus
Monday I will be reviewing lesson plans and scheduling walk throughs for the week. On Tuesday I have a couple of student centered meetings and a meeting with Ben Kern from the HELMs project. The Skoglund Science Fair will be held in the library on Friday. I will be attending the CDE Evaluation Pilot meeting in Del Norte that day. Saturday we will host the first middle school wrestling tournament for the year. Come out and watch our boys in action.
