Focus on the Fabulous
VIking Grapplers!
Our Center Viking wrestlers started their season wrestling hard and winning the 2nd place team award at our very own Center Invitational! We hosted the first tournament of the year and thanks to everyone working together it was a huge success and a great way to start the season. Beginning with the set up Friday afternoon to clean up Saturday night, it truly was a team effort to make everything run so smoothly! John Noriega and Walter Martinez, along with the wrestling team, got everything set up and in place Friday after school. Julio Paez made sure all of the technology was set up ahead of time and ready to roll, and he checked in throughout the day to make sure we weren’t having any tech issues.
It was a family affair with the Vance and Jones’ clans giving up their days to help out. Chris ran the computer generated tournament and we received many compliments for how well everything ran. Sarah helped me with admin., made sure clocks and scoring tables ran smoothly, and relieved the help as needed. Kollin Mellott helped at the scoring table along with Colin Schrader and Kaden and Kendall Vance kept brackets updated and posted. Kevin and Cheri ran the other score table and clock and Kasey and Kade were tappers throughout the day. As always, John Noriega did an excellent job announcing. I appreciate his willingness to jump in and help whenever needed. Susan Banning does an amazing job with taking care of the coaches and all our workers in the hospitality room and making sure concessions are fully stocked. Thanks to Carla Smith and Carlos Ramos for helping Susan. We always get rave reviews about our food and the way we take care of our guests. Nicole Neufeld and the cheerleaders were a huge help getting the medals organized and awarded and they did a super job cheering for our boys. Linda Donaldson and Joe Martinez did a great job with concessions- along with our 8th grade students.
Thanks to the custodial staff that helped to get everything set up and made sure things ran smoothly throughout the day. Walter and Mike Martinez took care of custodial issues for the first part of the day, they were relieved by Tom Garcia and Chris Segura, and then Panta and Gerald, with the rest of the crew came back in to clean up. The guys were willing to help with whatever I asked and I appreciate their great attitudes. And of course thanks to Brian Ullery, Carlos Lopez and Tito Chavez for doing a great job coaching the boys and helping with the running of the tournament.
We could never pull off events like this if we didn’t have such a great team that’s willing to pitch in, work hard, and work together. Thanks for making the first tournament of the year such a big success! Everyone was committed to excellence in all they did!

Rewind
I was able to get into classrooms throughout the week. On Monday, Annie Rice and Russ Braiden joined me and Mr. Jones in several instructional walks. The conversations that follow these walks are always beneficial to me and I believe they provide teachers with valuable feedback on ensuring we are providing all our students with the highest quality of instruction around. I had IEP and RTI meetings during the week that focused on students’ needs and making sure that we our providing the necessary support so that these kids can achieve at high levels and be successful in life. Kevin, Cruzita, Tito and I met as a team to review responsibilities and make sure we are getting all the bases covered in dealing with disciplinary issues. I also met with Ben Kern to discuss the PE curriculum and review the instructional approaches we are taking in our classes. Thursday evening I met with the Parent Involvement team to discuss strategies and make plans to work collaboratively with parents and all stakeholders in our community. The teams came up with some great ideas and we will be putting those plans into action in the next few weeks. Friday, students participated in the local Science Fair and attended an Upward Bound presentation. I will be discussing the Science Fair festivities in next week’s Center of Focus. I attended the CDE training at Del Norte that focused on using Student Outcomes in the Teacher/Principal evaluation process. Saturday I spent the day running our middle school wrestling tournament.
Forward Focus
Monday we will start the day early at our TCAP meeting in the community room of the library. After the staff training, we will meet with Lori to go over the ELL accommodations for TCAP. I will be reviewing lesson plans and scheduling walkthroughs for the week. I will also be meeting individually with students to discuss progress and behavior. Tuesday I will be busy with IEP meetings. Wednesday our band students will be performing at the Large Group Festival at OMS and I will attend the AD meeting in Alamosa. I hope to finalize plans to take our 7th grade students on their Merit Trip on Thursday. They have voted to go swimming at Hooper Pool. Friday a number of our middle school students will be representing Skoglund at the Adams State Science Fair. Good luck to all our scientists. On Saturday our middle school wrestlers will compete at Del Norte.
