Viking Cheers!! Focus on the Fabulous!!
This past week there were a number of opportunities that were made available to our students thanks to the hard work and dedication of our staff. The opportunities that we make possible for our students expose them to new experiences and learning and reinforce our core belief to prepare our students to be successful in life. It’s hard to keep up with everything going on sometimes, but I want to make mention of some of the great experiences our kids had this past week.
Mrs. Newmyer has once again taken our music programs to new heights! Thanks to her instruction and guidance our middle/high band students experienced success at the annual Solo and Ensemble competition at the college. We had a number of middle school musicians earn excellent ratings for their performances including Fidel Villa, Camille Ruggles, Alexis Sanchez, Carmen Ruggles, Shannon Weatherford, Daisy Rascon, Jordan Lobato, Mason Torr and Nancy Salto. Other middle school musicians who scored well were Armando Ruiz, Marcus Torrez, Jerico Gallegos, Trini Bucio, Esteban Perez, Fabiola Ojo de Agua, Sharon Valadez, Breanna Clutter, Celia Gevara and Rene Chavez. Mrs. Newmyer and our young musicians worked hard the last several weeks and were committed to pursuing excellence. Thanks to everyone who supported Mrs. Newmyer to make this trip possible and give these students this opportunity.
Mrs. Renner and Mrs. Ramos organized and led the Student Council trip to Denver Children’s Hospital. This was an amazing service project that our Student Council put together to provide support for children and families who are facing health challenges. Thank you ladies and Student Council for representing Skoglund Middle School through this positive outreach!
Some of the other experiences that were available to our students this week included the Great Sand Dunes presentation arranged by Mrs. Alfson and the College Day activities that were put together by Matthew, Josh, Greg and Mrs. Ruggles!
Let us continue to uphold our Core Beliefs and stay focused on the right work, so that quality instruction and learning takes place until the end of the year.

Rewind
Tuesday I reviewed lesson plans and dropped by several classrooms. That evening I attended the monthly Accountability and BOE meeting.
Our baseball season got off to a great start. Our middle school team traveled to Salida on Tuesday, and Thursday they went into extra innings to beat the Sanford Indians by one run. It was an exciting game and the team gave it their all!
Wednesday morning I had the chance to get into a few more classrooms and conduct walkthrough observations. Wednesday afternoon I attended the monthly AD meeting in Alamosa.
We had a productive BLT meeting Thursday morning to make plans for our upcoming early release and to discuss other pertinent issues. I appreciate the shared leadership that we have in Center and would like to thank all of the BLT members for their contributions and leadership throughout the year. We have addressed some important issues and it is nice to be able to talk things through with a group of people who are all working towards ensuring that we are providing our students with the best education possible. I’d like to recognize Daniel Newmyer, Becky Reed, Alice Burch, Linda Donaldson, Katrina Ruggles, Kindra Rounds, Julie Weatherford and Kevin Jones for their dedication to our Core Beliefs throughout the year! We have stayed the course and kept student learning and quality instruction as the focus of our efforts. I am honored to be part of the team and look forward to adding some new members to the team next year!
Later in the day I met with Becky to make plans for the upcoming NWEA testing that will take place for the middle school on April 25th and 26th. I will have a more detailed schedule out later in the week.
Thursday our Knowledge Bowl team competed in Del Norte and our youngest team took 6th place at their first meet! Way to go Jordan Lobato, Camille Ruggles and Shannon Weatherford!
Even though the weather didn’t agree with us, our Skoglund track team had a successful first meet with our kids placing in a number of events!

Forward Focus
Monday the Focal Point team will be here to conduct our administrative year end reviews. The review for Skoglund will take place from 10:00 to noon. We plan on visiting classes and then I will meet with the team to report out on our efforts for the second half of the year. The Monte PLC team will also be involved in the review process. Tuesday I will be helping with the freshmen/sophomore track meet that CHS will be hosting. Our middle school baseball team will be traveling to Centauri on Tuesday and Thursday we will host our first home game against Sierra Grande.
Mrs. Martinez will be representing the middle school at the Space Symposium this week. Jordan Lobato, Carmen Ruggles, and Jerry Rodriguez will be the middle school scientists attending the event this year.
Mid- terms are due to the office on Thursday, the 19th. Please make sure you are keeping up with your grades and entering them so that parents and students have a true representation of their progress in your class on their midterm report. This is part of our responsibility in ensuring that we are following through on our belief that quality planning, instruction and assessments lead to high student achievement. Students need to be provided with quick feedback in regards to their performance on assignments.
There will be a special BOE meeting held on Thursday evening.
Friday our track team will compete at Sangre de Cristo and I will travel to Salida to attend the SB 191 evaluation meeting.
Thanks for reading and have a great week!
