Focus on the Fabulous
Congratulations to our students that participated at the regional History Fair competition at Adams State on Saturday! Hannah Montoya presented her single exhibit on The Greek Civil War. We had three group exhibits present- Fidel Villa, Omar Prieto, Viviana Cereceres and Deja O'Cana on Jackie Robinson, Jasmine Rodriguez and Brisa Castillo on Child Labor, and Josselyn Duran and Leslie Padilla on the Trail of Tears. Our big winner at the competition was Isaiah Archuleta for his paper on The Ten Commandments. He will have the opportunity to participate at the state competition at CU in Denver in May. This is quite an accomplishment as he competed against students from all across the San Luis Valley. Congratulations to all our competitors and good luck to Isaiah as he moves on to the state competition. Thanks to Mr. Vigil in working with our students to get them ready for the regional competition.
Rewind
I started the week in Monte Vista at the secondary administrators’ PLC. We met altogether at the high school and discussed various issues, including the changes to assessments this year, scheduling, and the best strategies for teaching math at the secondary level. I then went to the middle school and conducted walkthroughs with Mr. Tichy and Mrs. O’Rourke. I headed back to Center that afternoon and finished reviews of lesson plans. The majority of the week was spent on teacher evaluations. Tuesday I conducted five mid year evaluations with teachers. I also spent time getting ready for Wednesday’s PLC. Tuesday afternoon we hosted Sierra Grande for our girls’ basketball game. Both teams played hard, but unfortunately we lost both games. Wednesday morning our kids participated in ICAP activities and then were released at noon. Teachers spent the afternoon analyzing winter NWEA data and making decisions on how to focus instruction based on those results. Our 7th grade team traveled to Del Norte for a game that afternoon. It was an exciting game as our girls came back to tie it in the end and take the game into OT. The Tigers pulled ahead in the final minutes of OT, but our girls played hard throughout the game and represented Center well. Thursday I was busy again with midyear evaluations. I met with three more teachers and had a student meeting. That afternoon our basketball team traveled to Centauri. The 7th grade team lost another close one and the 8th graders had a win. Friday was spent on the midyear building review. I met with Mr. Jones, Mr. Welsh, Ted Knight, and administration and staff from Ellicot as part of the review process.
Fast Forward
Monday morning I will be reviewing lesson plans, finalizing evaluations, and scheduling walkthroughs. Tuesday, a group from La Junta will be visiting to discuss some of the things we have in place that are proving to be successful with our population of students. I have a meeting with the administration team at two to refine our walkthrough form. Tuesday and Wednesday our girls’ basketball team will be hosting Sanford teams #1 and #2. Wednesday and Thursday I will continue to meet with staff on their midyear evaluations. Wednesday we will hold our annual Spelling Bee from 11-12:30 pm in the auditorium. Our 6th graders will celebrate their Merit Win at the movie theater in Alamosa Wednesday evening. Thursday afternoon our basketball will head to Del Norte for competition. Friday I will meet at Adams State for our All Valley Administrators’ PLC.
On a personal note….
Our hearts are all heavy in Center as we’ve learned that our friend and colleague, Adele Alfson, lost her husband unexpectedly Saturday morning. We are all sending her our love and support during this difficult time. Please keep Adele in your prayers.
