Viking Cheers!! Focus on the Fabulous!!
We made it through our big athletic weekend! We hosted the middle school baseball tournament and had sixteen teams competing on Friday and Saturday. Our Viking boys started the tournament on Friday by defeating the #1 seed, Centauri. They ended the season on Saturday in 4th place. Great season guys! We also hosted the end of the year track tournament on Saturday and had 18 teams from southern Colorado attend the event! Once again, our Viking athletes did a spectacular job and finished first place as a team. I agree with Mrs. Donaldson, “What a great way to end the season!”
I would like to recognize all of the amazing help I had this weekend pulling these big events off successfully. Thanks to Mike Martinez, Walter Martinez, Arnold Lujan and Panta Villagomez for taking care of everything for me. They got the fields lined and looking top notch for every game, and they helped me throughout the weekend with all the little issues that came up. I really appreciate their positive attitudes and willingness to help with everything. You guys are the best! Thank you!
So many people pitched in to help. It really was a team effort and it’s so nice to work with such a great group of people. Thanks to Kevin Jones for helping me with planning and organization, helping ump, and helping get umpires lined up for me at the last minute. Thanks to Mark Jones for helping at the high jump, concessions and throughout the day. He’s always willing to help however he can! Thanks to Annie for getting me a score board. Thanks to the Lobato family, Denise, Anthony and Alexa, for all their help with concessions and the track meet. They work so hard for our district and do it with smiles on their faces! Susan Banning, need I say more? Mr. Schoenfelder did a great job of getting the track meet organized and making sure it ran smoothly throughout the day! Thanks to Mr. Furukawa too! He kept the timers in line. Thanks to Judy and Butch Jones for running the discus, two days in a row. Dale Beiriger helped at the shot put, and made sure we had the right weights for kids to throw. Josh Lehman did a fantastic job announcing, both Friday and Saturday. Greg Malbon and Matthew Pratt were in charge of the awards and did a super job with that! Thanks guys for your help and great attitudes. You were a HUGE help! The high school track team and high school students helped with the various events throughout the day. Katrina Ruggles, Heatherlynn Butler, Christina Burch and Morgan Hart worked hard all day long at the long jump pit. Thank you all. John Noriega was the master of ceremonies at the baseball field for the championship games and did a super job announcing. (He also fixed the score board! Hip hip hooray!) Thanks to Jaime Hurtado for helping ump the championship games on Saturday. Char McKibbon and Adee David made sure all our workers were fed and delivered food and drink during the day. Thank you, ladies. I hope I didn’t forget anybody. Let me know if I did.
These events are a lot of work, but I feel like they were a success and everything ran smoothly thanks to everybody’s hard work.

One last thank thank Shirley Atencio for organizing all the birthday celebrations throughout the year. We had three birthdays this past week and we will celebrate our summer staff this week!
Birthday Celebrations Buddy Walk Track and Baseball Weekend
Rewind
Last Monday we celebrated Teacher Appreciation Day with a lunch for our teachers. I’d like to thank Marsha Felmlee for helping me to get that taken care of. We have an amazing teaching staff and I think they really enjoyed their long lunch on Monday. I also had a Job Day's student from Alamosa shadowing for the day. She helped me with various duties and Mrs. Atencio welcomed her into her classroom for the morning classes. Monday after school, Matt, Greg, Josh and Katrina organized the walk against bullying and had a great turnout. The kids loved the t-shirts and the slogan “Be a Buddy, Not a Bully” has been heard frequently in the halls. Friday evening, I attended the 5th grade recognition ceremony. Adele Alfson presented the class and I welcomed them into Skoglund Middle School. I am looking forward to having our fantastic staff work with our incoming students.
Tuesday, Mr. Hurtado, organized a lock-out so that we could run the K-9 unit through the building. The staff did a great job with protocol and it was a successful check. I also attended an IEP meeting for an incoming 5th grade student. I was able to get into a few more classrooms and completed my last rounds of walkthroughs on Tuesday. That evening we had a late night with district Accountability and BOE meetings. I worked on finalizing NWEA scores Tuesday and Wednesday and will be getting those results out to staff this week. I met with LJ Garcia, the principal of the middle summer school program, to finalize student lists. I also met with Mental Health staff to discuss future plans considering all the budget cuts that their organization is undergoing. Wednesday afternoon I traveled to Alamosa for the end of the year AD meeting. We reviewed by laws and made plans for next year. We decided to start a rotating schedule for schools to host big events. We drew numbers and next year Center will be hosting the baseball tournament. This schedule will give all schools an equal chance to host the larger events on a regular schedule. Thursday our tech department organized and ran the lap top turn in process for the middle school. At lunch time, I met at Azteca with the Health Committee for the year end meeting. Friday and Saturday we hosted the baseball tournament and track meet.

Forward Focus
We’ve made it to the last week of the year. Monday will be a busy day at the middle school with the End of the year Awards Assembly taking place from 8:00- 10:00 am in the auditorium. After the assembly, we will begin clean up for Spirit Day. Please look over the schedule Mrs. Renner sent out to determine where you and your students will be assigned. After lunch, we will have the honor of cutting Ms. Banning’s hair for the Locks of Love program. We will also recognize our top readers for the year. The middle school students will complete the check out process during the afternoon. When the 7th graders have completed check out they will take off for their end of the year trip. Monday evening we will wish our 8th graders well as they are promoted to freshmen status to begin their high school careers. Congratulations 8th graders. We are proud of you.
Tuesday will be the last day of school for kids. At 11:00 am we will have our Cornerstone Removal Ceremony. The sixth grade class will be heading out for their end of the year trip.
Wednesday, teachers will have the day to work on finalizing grades and packing up classrooms. Thursday, our 8th grade class will take their end of the year trip to Denver to see the Rockies game.
Please look over the schedule that Mr. Welsh sent out if you have any questions about end of the year procedures for our big move. We’ve accomplished quite a bit this year! Have a great last week of school.
