Focus on the Fabulous
Our sixth graders celebrated their Merit win with a trip to the movies on Wednesday night. It’s quite an accomplishment for our sixth graders to win a merit trip, so we are proud of how hard our sixth graders are working and we want to recognize all that they've done. We took 45 students to the movies and had a great time. Thanks to my gracious sponsors- Mr. Hagan, Mrs. Martinez, and Mrs. Lujan for going on the trip with us. The kids had a great time and we were able to recognize our 6th graders commitment to excellence.
Congratulations to our Spelling Bee champion, Camille Ruggles! She will go on to represent Center at the regional and state competition. Brandon Rivera placed second. All of the students that participated scored 88% or higher and they all have earned the right to compete at the regional competition at ASU on February 5th. Congratulations to - Omar Mendoza, Fidel Villa, Shannon Weatherford, Camille Ruggles, Alexis Sanchez, Brandon Rivera, Gloria Dominguez, Max Garcia, Johnnie Torr, Yaneli Licano, and Xondriea Atencio.

Rewind
The majority of the last week was taken up with teacher evaluations. I was able to finish meeting with all of the middle school teachers and finalize evaluations by the end of the week. This is a time consuming process, but the genuine conversations I had with teachers about instruction and student learning made it all worthwhile. I feel confident about the work that we are doing in the middle school and I know that every teacher is working hard to fulfill our core beliefs and provide our students with the best instruction possible. We are all committed to our primary purpose of increasing student academic achievement for All students.
On Tuesday, I met with the team from La Junta. We took them around the building and allowed them to see some of our teachers in action. We took time to discuss some of the things we are doing that we feel are having positive impact on what we are doing for our kids. Our girls’ basketball teams had a busy week with three games. We hosted Sanford on Tuesday and Wednesday, and then traveled to Del Norte on Thursday. The girls are playing hard and having success on the court.
Friday I met with other administrators from across the Valley at Adams State. We attended a moving presentation on bullying, and had conversations around our new evaluation tool and SB-191. It’s always nice to have conversations with other administrators who are facing similar challenges, and have the opportunity to discuss the best way to address different issues.
Saturday I spent the day in Center, helping with the Valley Classic wrestling tournament. Our high school boys wrestled well and the tournament ran smoothly. I also attended Dr. Alfson’s funeral. We continue to hold Adele in our prayers. It was a lovely service and a number of our staff was there to show support for Adele during this time. Thanks to Katrina Ruggles for organizing food for the reception.

Fast Forward
I plan to get into classes as much as possible this week. On Monday morning I will be checking weekly plans and scheduling times to get into classrooms and observe instruction. I also hope to schedule some instructional walks with teachers. I have a couple of RTI and IEP meetings during the week. Wednesday, eleven of our students will compete at Adams State in the regional spelling bee competition. Our basketball team will travel to Moffat on Tuesday and we will host Monte Vista on Thursday. Wednesday I will attend our monthly AD meeting in Alamosa. Staff and students have the option of attending the motivational speaker, Jeffrey Lund on Thursday morning. His presentation will focus on overcoming obstacles in career planning. Friday, our students will not have school and we will host the All Valley PLC. The focus of this PLC will be on instructing SLV teachers how to use the SLV Evaluation Calculator in order to design models that can be used to determine how the student learning half of SB 191 will be measured.
