Focus on the Fabulous
There are so many great students at Skoglund Middle School doing great things that are worthy of praise! The middle school staff wants to recognize the hard work, positive behaviors, and overall effort and character of those kids who are working hard to be super students! Congratulations to our newest round of Skoglund Spotlight Students- Omar Mendoza, Kimberly Lopez, Ethan Salazar, and Vivian Cereceres. Each of these students was nominated by different teachers for their hard work and positive behaviors.
Omar Medoza- Loya was selected by Mrs. Ruggles. She shared that Omar consistently completes high quality work. He listens in class and does not waset time getting his assignment done. He is prepared when he comes to class and is willing to help other students understand difficult concepts. His work was chosen as an exemplar in class because of its high quality.
Ethan Salazar was nominated by Mrs. Martinez. She stated that he has shown mastery in novel discussions for Socratic Seminar. He is a supportive classmate to his peers and is always kind and helpful to others. Ethan has grown into a solid, positive student in our school and it is a pleasure to have him in classes. Unfortunately, his family recently moved to Del Norte, but we are hoping to have him back next year.
Viviana Cereceres was chosen by Ms. McEvoy as a Spotlight Student. Viviana has done an excellent job in her Explore class. She participates in daily class activities. She is always on time for class, ready to work and she goes the extra mile at the end of class helping to pick up and make sure the room is clean. Viviana worked hard on her History Fair project during Explore class. Several other teachers supported Ms. McEvoy’s selection of Viviana
Kimberly Lopez was nominated by Ms. Donaldson. She said that Kim stood out from her classmates because of her work ethic and positive behavior. Even though Kim is quiet, her teachers take notice of her because of the positive contributions she brings to the class. She models what a quality student is all about!
As part of our mission to promote excellence in our school, Skoglund Middle School recognizes individual students whose actions have gone above and beyond the expectations of conduct through the Skoglund Spotlight Students Recognition. Students who receive this award have displayed exemplary behavior in regards to being responsible citizens, creating a positive school environment, and in acting as exceptional student leaders within our middle school community.
Rewind
We started our 3rd quarter last Monday. Kids and teachers hit the ground running on Monday after our Christmas break. I reviewed lesson plans, did a couple walk throughs and had a student meeting on Monday. I spent time structuring class schedules based on NWEA results to ensure that kids are getting the necessary instruction in specific content. Wednesday morning our Student Council hosted our mid year Awards Assembly. The Student Council opened the assembly with a fun skit and did a great job running the event. Students were recognized for academic successes and hard work so far this year. I had my annual AD meeting at noon in Alamosa. We set dates for the spring wrestling and track seasons. That afternoon I met with Mr. Welsh to review the budget and make necessary adjustments for the remainder of the year. On Thursday we ran a lockout drill and had the drug dogs visit our campus. Teachers and students did a great job with the lockout and instruction continued throughout the drill. Friday, teachers and administrators spent the day in Sanford at the All Valley PLC. Teachers worked on analyzing the results of the 2nd quarter assessments and created quarterly exams for the 3rd quarter. Friday and Saturday our middle school girls competed in their first competitions at the Sierra Grande tournament.
Fast Forward
This week I will be spending time on teacher evaluations. I will be sending invites to teachers to schedule times to meet with them individually in the next couple of weeks. Tuesday I will treat the Skoglund Spotlight Students to lunch and Wednesday we will have a pizza party for all the students who made it through the first half of the year without a behavior referral. The pizza party will be in Ms. Dolan’s room at lunch time. The 6th graders won the Merit Race this time, so I will be meeting with them and scheduling their reward based on their votes. Tuesday evening we will have our monthly Accountability and Board meetings. Our middle school basketball teams will be playing at home on Tuesday against Sargent and Thursday they will travel to Creede. Wish them luck and come watch them play!
