Viking Cheers!! Focus on the Fabulous!!
There are so many great students at Skoglund Middle School doing great things that are worthy of praise! The middle school staff wants to recognize the hard work, positive behaviors, and overall effort and character of those kids who are working hard to be super students! We have started a new student recognition program that will allow us to honor those students on a regular basis. This new program is called Skoglund Spotlight Students and this week we will be honoring our first group of kids.
Skoglund Spotlight Students
Our first student was nominated by Carol Phillips for his helpful behavior after a fellow classmate slipped on the ice and hit her head on the way home from school. David Macias helped this student back to the bus so that Mrs. Phillips could make sure she was okay and then he escorted her to her house and made sure she got home safely. He was very compassionate and showed concern for his young friend. Mrs. Phillips was impressed with his willingness to help another student and wanted to thank him for being such a big help in that situation. David Macias is one of our first recipients of the Skoglund Spotlight. Congratulations David and thanks for being such a helpful, considerate young man! We are proud of you and how you represent your school.
Our second Spotlight Student is Jordan Lobato.
She was nominated by several teachers for being an exceptional student. Josh Lehman, our Vista volunteer, stated that since he has been at our school he has witnessed her strong work ethic in the classroom on a daily basis. She is consistently on time, finishes her work, stays focused and on task, and is just an all around great kid. Mrs. Newmyer wanted to recognize Jordan's work in band. She plays the french horn in our school band and this is one of the most difficult instruments to play. I personally have had the opportunity to watch her on the basketball court leading her team to a number of victories. Her determination and drive are just as evident on the court as they are in the classroom. Jordan is exactly the type of student we want to recognize for being a positive role model and representing our school in a positive way. It is very fitting for her to be one of the first Skoglund Spotlight Students! Congratulations Jordan!
Our third Spotlight Student is Brianna Garcia.
Ms. Reed made the nomination because of the positive behavior she has seen Brianna demonstrate this year. She has recently shown excellent and mature behavior in the library. She has visited several times in the past two weeks for different purposes, and each time she has focused on her specific library purpose- choosing a book or working on a computer based assignment. I have also witnessed Brianna’s positive leadership abilities this school year. I have had the opportunity to see Brianna in action when I have visited various classrooms. On several different occasions I saw her helping other students and making sure they were understanding the teacher’s instructions or giving support when other kids were not understanding the lesson. She is a strong student and a natural leader. I am pleased to see her using her leadership ability in a positive way and supporting her classmates. Way to go Brianna!
Congratulations Spotlight Students!
Congratulations Spotlight Students!
Everyone must be committed to the pursuit of excellence.
This is the core belief that really stood out for me this week. It is so apparent to me that this is an ingrained belief of our staff. Everyone working with our kids is truly committed to the pursuit of excellence and we don’t make any excuses about it. Having had several conversations with individuals working in various districts around the valley, it becomes exceedingly evident to me that the Center school district is headed in the right direction, that we are all on board with supporting the vision of our school, and that we believe that we can accomplish great things by doing the right work. I feel very fortunate that I work in this district with individuals who are here for the kids and who are doing everything they can to ensure our kids get the best education possible. I have to give credit to Mr. Welsh for leading our district in this direction and not making any bones about it! It’s a great thing and I am confident our kids will reap the benefits of our hard work! Thank you all for having the guts to pursue excellence!
Rewind
My favorite part of this past week was meeting with individual students who have shown positive improvement in their behavior over the last several months. I reviewed all of the middle school students’ behavior referrals since the beginning of the year and found that there were a number of students who had been in a little trouble at the beginning of the year, but haven’t had any referrals in at least two months. It was fun to call the kids in, tell them good job, and give them some positive attention! I will be sending out letters to the students’ families to let them know that their kids have made positive changes!
I also enjoyed meeting with the middle school teachers to discuss their classroom layout and furniture options for the new building. I am compiling a list to send to Brent Jones stating the individual requests of the teachers based on the options they provided for us. If I haven’t met with you yet, please schedule a time on Monday or Tuesday for us to meet. The rest of the week consisted of walkthroughs, various meetings, a tour of our new school, updating the middle school reading program, and the Monte/Center math PLC. Our middle school girls had two away games during the week and I got to see a lot of great wrestling at the Valley Classic on Saturday!
Forward Focus
This coming week I will continue meeting with teachers on their classroom arrangements. On Tuesday I will be meeting with Lori to work with her on getting the middle/high school data board together for us to review as a staff. I have a District Leadership meeting Monday night and the school Spelling Bee will be on Wednesday. As always, I will be popping into classrooms and reviewing lesson plans! We will host two home basketball games this week for our middle school girls.
I hope you all had a restful weekend. Here’s to a great week!
