Viking Cheers!! Focus on the Fabulous!!
Happy Teacher Appreciation Week!
As I had the chance to get into quite a few classrooms last week, I was impressed with the level of instruction that was happening in the middle school classes. Even though we are nearing the end of the year, quality instruction hasn’t stopped. Teachers are continuing to prepare solid lesson plans and provide our students with top notch instruction. We have a lot going on, with having to get packed and moved out of our building, however, there is no excuse for poor quality instruction and that core belief is being lived out at Skoglund Middle School. Way to go teachers! Thanks for working so hard to ensure our kids are provided with the best education possible.
On Tuesday evening we inducted seven middle school students into the National Junior Honor Society. Katrina Ruggles organized the event that was held in the auditorium and Ms. Banning was the guest speaker. SalmaCendejas and Aaliyah Porres hosted the ceremony and shared with the audience the important qualifying characteristics of each member. The NJHS is a national organization that recognizes outstanding middle school students who have demonstrated excellence in the areas of scholarship, leadership, service and character. Please congratulate the following students on their accomplishment: Andres Almeida, Hannah Montoya, George Venzor, Camille Ruggles, Shannon Weatherford, Alexis Sanchez- Duran and Carmen Ruggles.
Congratulations once again to Kate Newmyer and our middle high band! They had another stellar performance at the Blossom Parade in Canon City. Way to go Viking Band!
Thanks to Adele Alfson for organizing the 8th grade trip to the Reality Store on Monday. This was a great experience for our kids and one that prepares them to be successful in life.
We had a GREAT trip to the Rockies game on Wednesday! Thanks to Mr. Jones and Mrs. Ruggles for making this possible. We took our twenty top readers from the middle school to watch the exciting game. The kids had a great time and the game ended with a walk off home run from Giambi! Go Rockies!

Rewind
On top of the things I’ve already mentioned, last week we finished up NWEA testing. Thanks to Lori, Becky and Carol for helping us to get that accomplished. Monday, I attended the last day of the CADA conference before heading home that evening. Our baseball team had two games last week, one against Monte and one against Centauri. They fought hard, but unfortunately lost both. Tuesday evening was the NJHS induction ceremony. A number of our students had the chance to compete at the Hershey’s track meet on Wednesday. Thanks to Annie Rice for organizing that opportunity for our kids! Thursday, Susan, Julie, and I met with Haskin staff to discuss the incoming 5th graders. I feel confident that we will be able to accomplish great things with these kids, thanks to our amazing staff. The rest of the day I met with Mr. Jones and Mrs. Cooper and worked on our end of the year teacher evaluations. I will be scheduling times to meet with individual teachers throughout the week to discuss year end reviews.
Forward Focus
This week we will be celebrating our teachers! Monday at 11:50 am we will host a Teacher Appreciation Lunch in the library. I will be reviewing lesson plans and getting into classrooms again this week. Tuesday evening I will attend the District Accountability and Board meetings. Wednesday, I will meet with Carey Deacon from Mental Health to discuss future plans. I will then head to Alamosa for the end of the year AD Meeting. I have a few RTI and IEP meetings during the week. Wednesday- Friday we will be having our end of the year finals. Thursday we will have the yearend health meeting. Friday and Saturday will be jam packed as we host the end of the year baseball tournament and track meet!
Another busy week! Hang on for the ride! Have a great week. Thank you teachers for all you do! We have the best teachers around and I feel honored to work with each of you!
